Etymology

No certainty is possible. The first element may be the ME  vb. tavel , tevel , 'to argue, discuss, quarrel, contend' (NED s. v .), and the name may mean 'wood of (or in) dispute,' cf. Threepwood (Nb), Threapwood (Ch), Threapland (Cu, Y), which certainly have that sense. At a later stage folk-etymology has been at work.
