Etymology

Lithersgate Common (6″) [lizgət] is Lydesgate in 1296 (SR) (p), Lidesgate a. 1369 (SRS 31, 59), Lizgate 1795 (GY), Lysgate 1823 (G). The first element is possibly OE  hliþ, hence 'gate of the slope.' There is a fairly steep ascent here.
