Etymology

Nepcote is perhaps to be associated with the family of Philip le Nulp (1256 Sele) and John le Nolp (1296 SR). This is made probable by the form Nob Gate in 1823 (G). This pers. name would seem to be a nickname from the rare ME  nolp , 'blow.'The modern form has perhaps been influenced by nep , a dialect word for catmint.
