Etymology

Heregrave (lost). In a Sele charter (no. 29) of c. 1256 we have Heregraue as a pers. name and a Heregrautngfeld . It is the Heregraue of 1231 (FF) and the home of William de Heregraue in 1296 (SR). This, as Mr Salzman points out in his edition of the charters, is the heregraf of the OE bounds of Washington (BCS 834). It means 'army grove,' v. here , graf .
