Etymology

Mr W. D. Peckham notes for us an entry in the year 1505 in the Register of Bishop Fitzjames (f. 43). In that year “the church of New Guldeford, within the brook (marisco ) commonly called Guldeford Innyng , now reclaimed from the sea and made dry land by Richard Guldeford, Kt., having been newly built at his expense,” was consecrated by the Bishop and made into a parish church. The Guldeford family, who thus gave their name to the place, doubtless originally came from Guildford (Sr).East in contrast to that place itself.
