Etymology

This difficult name may contain an OE  pers. name It (t )a , the cognate of OHG  Izo , Iziko , Izila (Förstemann, PN 944). This name Itta is to be taken as a pet-form for a compound name in Id - or Ith -. Itta is on record as an alternative name for OGer  Iduberga (Förstemann loc. cit .) and we have in Old English the pers. name Ida , Iddi and the compounds Idhild in Idhildestan (BCS 1114), and probably Idhelm in Idemestone (BCS 947, late copy), now Idmiston (W). Itta would seem to be one of the pet-names showing unvoicing of a voiced consonant.
