Etymology

Tigbourne Fm (6″) is Tykebourne 1332 SR (p), Tykeborne 1359Loseley (p), Tyckeborne 1401Loseley , Tykebornelane 1483 ib., Tickborne t. Jas 1 ECP, Tikborne 1630 Godalming ParReg, Titchborne 1673Loseley . The last form may refer to Tichbourne Wood (6″) near by, but the two names are clearly identical in origin, the latter showing the normal palatalisation. The first element is probably OE  ticcen , 'kid.' Variations between nom. ticcen and oblique case forms such as ticc (e )nes , led to the development of variant forms tichen , tiken . Hence 'kid stream,' v. burna .
