Norney is North (e )nye 1288Ass , 1327 Banco, Nordeney 1548LRMB , le Norny feild 1586Loseley . This probably goes back to OE (bi )norðan ege , 'to the north of the marshy land,' the place standing high above the marshy land by the Wey, v. eg . Cf. Nornay in Blyth (Nt), Northenaye 1287 Dugd iv, Northney 1598Depositions , which lies beyond the river Ryton on the north bank of that stream. For names of this type cf. PN D xxxvii.
