Etymology

Tilhill Fm. In the Bishop of Winchester's rentals this name appears in the following forms, both as a place and personal name: Tulehull (e ) 1223, 1288, Tillehulle 1235, 1430, Tullehull (e ) 1246, 1287, 1330, Tulehill 1258, Tolehull 1318, Tulhulle 1420.The first element can hardly be identical with that of Tilford supra 173 which shows no forms with u or o . Rather we must take it to be a personal name Tulla , as in Tilleslow (PN D 212), the vowel having been influenced from an early date by that of the neighbouring Tilford. Cf. Tilsey infra 229.
