Historical Forms

  • Row ditch c.1780 Map

Etymology

Rowledge is probably identical with La Rowedich c. 1200 (1285), Rowediche 1282–1304 Winton, Rowl ridge 1759Map , Row ditch c. 1780Map (T.F.G.). If so, the meaning will be 'rough ditch,' v. ruh . The reference may have been to a ditch much overgrown with vegetation, etc. There may be another reference to it in the Farnham charter (v. supra 166).
