Etymology

That Getinges corresponds to Cobham is confirmed by the mention of Yetyngge , Yatyngg under Coveham in the Chertsey Register Book. For loss of initial g (i.e. y ), cf. Easthampstead and Evendon in the neighbouring county of Berkshire, not many miles off, for which we have earlier forms Yezhamstede , Yetʒham - stede 1166, 1179 P, and Yendon , Yeningdon , Yenedon 1241, 1284Ass . The name Getinges is probably, as suggested by Ekwall (PN in -ing 43), a patronymic derivative of OE  Gēat . For the phonetic development in the suffix, cf. Binton infra 181.
