Etymology

Bull Riding Fm (6″) is Bolerude 1492Chertsey , Bull Riding 1848TA . The original name is a compound of bull and ME  rude , OE  *rīed , *rȳd , 'clearing,' discussed under Inchreed (PN Sx 378). v. infra 364. Later the second element was changed to the more usual riding (v. hryding ) which has much the same sense.
