Sawcombe

Early-attested site in the Parish of Winchcomb

Historical Forms

  • Saltcoumb(esgate) 13,1316,1317 WinchLB
  • Sawcombes 1692 Rogers

Etymology

Sawcombe (lost), Saltcoumb (esgate )13, 1316, 1317 WinchLB, Sawcombes 1692Rogers . Since this place is associated with Coates, Langley and Postlip, the coomb may be that of Langley Brook, v. cumb . The first el. is OE  salt 'salt' but the allusion is not clear; one of the old tracks in the valley (like that from Langley over to Prescott) might have been a salt-way.
