Etymology

'Farmstead associated with Frēola', v. -ing 4 , tūn . The pers.n. is an unrecorded OE  Frēola which would be a hypocoristic form of names like Frēohelm or the like and cognate with OG  Frilo . The later forms arise from a contraction of Freolin - to an intermediate *Freon - and the development of -ēo - to dial. -au -, -ow - (Fraunton ), as in Naunton (i, 199 supra , ii, 34 infra ), cf. Phonol. § 22; Fraun - was then adapted analogically to the form of other Framptons in Gl.
