Etymology

Patcombe (lost), on patancumb 769–85 (11th) BCS 246, on Wata cumb (sic)11 Heming 245, Pateco (u )mbe 14, 1317 WinchLB, Padecumbesfelde 1316 ib, Patcombe (wodd )1539AOMB , 1540MinAcct , cf. also Pateleie 1316 WinchLB. 'Pata's valley', from an OE  pers.n. Pat (t )a , Peat (t )a found in such p.ns. as Petton, Patcott (D 531, 543), Patney (W 314), etc., v. cumb . In the OE  form Wata - there has been confusion between p and þ (w ); BCS 246 also reads Watan -, but the MS in fact has patan -.
