Etymology

'The high farmstead or village', v. hēah (weak obl. hēan ), tūn , so called from its high situation. The affixes are from Lat  monialis 'nun', abbatissa 'abbess' and OE  myncen (gen.pl. myncena ) and refer to the nuns of the Trinity at Caen in Normandy, to whom the manor was granted c. 1080.
