Etymology

Besbury Fm, Bessebour ', Besseburylond Ric 2Rent , Bestberry 1830 M.The first el. is possibly a pers.n. OE B (e )assa or Be (o )ssa . No such name is known but it could be a hypocoristic form of some OE  dithematic name such as Beadusige , *Bēdsige , etc. or indeed a mutated variant of the recorded Bass (a ) (Redin 26, 84). Such a pers.n. is thought to occur in Besley (D 535) and possibly in Besley (Db 73), though the latter may contain ON  Bessi . But it is also possible that the p.n. is from an OE  be ēastan byrig '(land) to the east of the fortification' (v. be , ēastan , burh ); Besbury Fm lies half a mile east of Burleigh and The Bulwarks (infra ), which would be the burh referred to. Cf. Beastbrook (46supra ).
