Etymology

The name describes the deep valley running north from Gatcombe Water to The Long Stone (156–8899), which makes a clear gap in the hill-side between the wooded slopes, v. geat 'gap in the hills' (as the last spelling Yat - indicates), cumb . Gatcombe (iii, 252infra ) is probably of similar origin.
