Etymology

Pentensary Fm (6″) is ter ' petanc 'ie 1408Ct , le Pytancer 1547 Pat, and takes its name from the 'pittancer' of Waltham Abbey (cf. Offic 'm Pitant ' de Waltham 1485 WalthamD). Cf. Pittensarys (PN Wo 94) and Pittance Wood in Chelmsford (1512 ER xxx), belonging to St Osyth's Abbey.
