Etymology

Claverhambury Fm is terra Pagani de Clauerham 1181-90 P, Claverhambury-launde 1547 Pat, 1561 Winstone, Clerambury , Clerumbury 1594 N. It is difficult to be certain, but Paganus probably took his second name from Claverham (So) and not from any local place of that name. For the 16th-century pronunciation cf. Claverley (Sa), which is pronounced Clarely (Duignan), Clarewood (PN NbDu 47), Clareborough (PN Nt 33) and Clearhedge Wood (PN Sx 406). bury shows the manorial use of burh .
