Etymology

Patty Pool (6″) is Padipol 1270Ct , Padypol (e )1277 QW, 1548 Pat, Patipol , Patypol (bregge )1400, 1403Ct . Possibly 'pool of Pada ,' v. ing , pol . Cf. Padiham (PN La 79). Alternatively we may have the dialectal paddah , paddy , 'frog,' but this has hitherto been recorded only from Northern England.
