Etymology

Studley (lost), Stodlege 1086 DB, Stodleye 1280Ass (p), Stodlegh 1377 Cl, Stodley 1524 Hutch3, Studley 1534 ib, 'woodland clearing where a herd of horses is kept', v. stōd , lēah . The DB form Slitlege (also f. 84c in the next but one entry to Stodlege ) may also refer to this place, if the spelling is corrupt (VCHDo 3 112, ThornDB 56, 45).
