Etymology

Hr Lewell Fm, Lr Lewell Fm (SY 732876, 742897) [ˈluːəl], Lewelle 1086 DB, Liwelle ib, 1201 FF, Liwella 1194 P (p), 1195 P (p), Lywolle 1285 FA, Leywell 1454Weld 1, Lewell Farm or Stafford otherwise East Stafford 1669 Hutch3, Lewell or East Stafford 1774 Hutch1, 1863 Hutch3, Lewel 1811 OS, probably 'well or spring with a shelter', from hlēo(w) and wella (cf. Brindiwell D 414 which is probably 'well with a wooden covering'); in view of the early i - forms, as Professor Löfvenberg notes, the first el. is likely to be WSax  hlīeg, hlīg , or hlīewe rather than hlēo(w). Several springs are marked 6″. For East Stafford, which formed a joint tithing with Lewell in 1795 Boswell, v. infra .
