The el. hamm may here mean 'cultivated plot in marginal land' as suggested by M. Gelling, NoB 48151–3, for various names in Ha, Brk and D; Yellowham is in high (400′) wooded country on the W edge of the par. 1 mile from the nearest stream (R. Piddle or Trent). Throte no doubt refers to the narrow cutting made through the hill by the Dorchester-Puddletown road (the Wey whych ledyth betwen Pudeltowne and Dorchest '1539AOMB ), v. þrote 'throat, passage', cf. Snail Creep in Stinsford par. infra .
