Etymology

A manor on R. Piddle or Trent (cf. Affpuddle par. supra ) once held by the Bardolf family (Ralph Bardolf 1244 Ch, Drogo Bardolf 1272 ib, Richard Bardolf 1288Ass , etc.; they were probably descended from Bardulph (the OG  pers.n. Bardulf ) de Chiselburneford (v. foll.), also called Bussel , c. 1165 MontC, who was himself descended from the DB tenant of Little Cheselbourne, Roger Boisell , v. Fägersten 176–7), v. tūn 'farm, estate'. Bardolfueshulle 15ChrP no doubt belonged to the same family, v. hyll . The 13th cent. Drogo Bardolf probably gave his name to Druce Fm infra .
