Etymology

Duddle Fm (SY 731907), Duddle Fm 1842TAMap , Doddel 1270 (1372) ChrP , Duddell 1459AddRoll , 1539AOMB , Duddle 1580Wal et passim , Dudle (pounde )1624, 1625Wal , Duddles 1811 OS. Perhaps an -el derivative of the el. represented by ME  dodde 'hill' suggested as possibly entering into Dodding's Fm in Bere Regis par. supra , cf. ModE  duddle 'a teat, nipple' (NED rec. once 1708) and Do dial. duddles 'little dods or dumps' (Barnes 61). The topography of Duddle is similar to that of Dodding's; Duddle Fm itself lies at about 140′ on a subsidiary watercourse of R. Frome, but behind it the ground rises to 300′ at Duddle Heath infra , cf. Duddle Hill 1839TA .
