Etymology

'The Danes' spring', from Dene, Danir and wella , wælla , with hūs , hall , lane , (ge)hæg, mǣd . The form hospital de Newalle 1349 Pap iii293 is a metanalysis. Denwale Rode (v. rād ) was an anchorage for ships in the port of Chester, cf. Denhall Gutter, Old Quay 223, 225infra . The hospital, for the use of poor travellers from Ireland and other poor or shipwrecked men is first mentioned c.1234 MRA 718p.343 as 'the hospital of Burton in Wirehall', cf. Orm2 ii543, 556, but some foundation was here in 1184 (LCRS xcii 15 n.i and Addenda 186, under the erroneous form Bauewell '). The hamlet of Denhall was in Ness township, it gives name to Denhall Gutter in Great Neston and to Wirral Colliery 226infra in Little Neston. The hospital was closely associated with Burton parish by appropriation c.1234 MRAloc. cit. (or 1238 Sheaf1 3, p.176); the site of its chapel is in Burton township at 109–302747; and the hamlet was reckoned a part of Burton parish in Danwell in the parish of Barton 1646 Sheaf3 i.
