Etymology

'Fortified site on the River Kennet', v. burh . The river-name is discussed Pt 1 11–12. One of the manors was called Kintbury Eaton , because it was given to the priory of Nuneaton in Wa in the 12th cent. (VCH iv, 208). Eaton was apparently sometimes corrupted to Eagle because of the Hundred-name (v. 289).
