Etymology

The places later called Anvilles 309, Balsdon 314 and Templeton 316 were originally parts of Inglewood. Anvilles was earlier known as Godingeflod , the forms for which are given infra , or Ingleflod Cumberwell from the family of Philip de Cumbrewell , who held the estate in the 13th cent. Balsdon was alternatively called Ingeflot Belet , and Templeton was also known as Templeyngeflod .

These places lie on either side of the stream which rises a little to the S. of Inkpen, and flows into the Kennet. The contours suggest that it once had head-streams rising further south. This is the flōde 'stream' referred to in the second el. of Ingleflod . The first el. is clearly identical with that of Inkpen 309. Less weight should be attached to the forms with Inge - (as opposed to Ingel -) in this name, as -l may have been lost by dissimilation, owing to the -l -of flōde .

The earlier name of Anvilles 309 is Godingeflode Hy 2 (1270) Ch, Todlingesfeld '1200 Cur, Godingflod '1220 Fees, Godingevlod 1230 Pat, Godingeflod '1242–3 Fees, Goddyngeflod ', Godingeflod , Godingfeld '1284Ass , Gadingesflode 1294SR , Godyngeflode 1316 AD, Goud Ingeflod 1318 ib, Goudingeflod 1327SR , Goddyngflod 1355 AD, Goddynfelde 1428 FA, howse now called Goodwynnes floode 1591DL .This has gōd2 'good' prefixed to Ingeflod ; cf. Godedune supra 307.The prefixing of Better and Warre (i.e. 'worse') to High and Low Hesket Cu 200 might be compared.
