Etymology

Templeton, Little Templeton, Templeton '1242–3 Fees, c. 1280 S, 1310–11FF , Templington ' Templariorum 1284Ass , Templetone 1316 FA, Templeton 1323 Cl, 1353 Ipm, Templeton Farme 1598Dep , Lit Temple Farm , Gr Templeton Farm 1761 Rocque. This is the land in Inglewood which was granted to the Knights Templars c. 1147–8, v. Templars 158–9. Several other estates of the Templars were known as Templeton, cf. D 394 for one example. For this late use of tūn as a living suffix, cf. Balsdon supra . The estate was also known as Templeyngeflod (315).
