Etymology

'Forest-glade or clearing of the Head (d )ings ', v. -ingas , lēah . The first el. is an old folk-name derived from the OE  pers.n. Head (d )a (Redin 66, 67), which accounts for the variation between Hed - and Had - forms (cf. Phonol. § 19).
