Etymology

'Gypa's farmstead', v. tūn . The pers.n. is an OE  Gyp (p )a , as suggested by such p.ns. as Gipping Sf, Gibside Du 93; it may well have survived in the ME pers.ns. Ghippe filius Rolfi and Higgaldus frater Ghippe (Holme on the Wold YE)1130–8 YCh 970.
