  • Skeppstern 1559 WillY
  • Kepstarne 1572,1583 PRLds
  • Cappesthorne 1581 FF
  • Capsterne 1583 FF
  • Keep-starne 1726 PRChp

Etymology

Kepstorn, 1759 PRChp, Skeppstern 1559 WillY, Kepstarne 1572, 1583 PRLds, Cappesthorne 1581 FF, Capsterne 1583 FF, Keep-starne 1726 PRChp. The spellings are ambiguous, though the form Kepstern is predominant; the first el. could be the ON  byname Keppr or Kappr (a late assimilated form of Kampr , parallel to Kappi from Kampi ); the second might possibly be þorn or þyrne 'thorntree', but is hardly likely to be ON  tjǫrn 'tarn, pond' on topographical grounds, since the name refers to a steep bank.
