, cf. Coat Lowage , Great Lowage , Hill Lowage & Pool Lowage 1847TA , perhaps from the rare word lowage (1531 NED) , probably meaning ' a hiring-fee ' , i.e. land on which a hiring - fee was levied , or which carried some privilege in respect of remitted rent for which ' allowance ' was made .
