, a lake caused by Peover Eye flooding a subsidence of the ground over old salt - workings , cf. Ollershawlane Works supra . The el . flasshe ' a swamp ' , here ' a shallow water, a pool ' , is applied to lakes formed in this way along Peover Eye and R . Weaver in the area of the Ch salt - field , cf. Witton Flashes 197infra , which begin as shallow encroachments of water upon the subsided banks of the stream , creating swamps which deepen into lakes as the ground sinks . The same phenomenon is named The Flash at Preesall La .
