Etymology

Witherwin Fm (101–854267), Wyther Wyne c.1250LRO Dx, Witherwing 1768EnclA , 1842 OS, cf. Withowing Lane 1831 Bry (Lumbbrook Road infra ). Perhaps this p.n. is like Mondrem 1 10, an abstract noun, i.e. OE  wiðer -winn 'contest, strife, conflict', e.g. a place where this occurred. Alternatively, the final el. may be winn 1 , wynn 'a pasture', cf. Comberwheyn 1211, Atlow Winn, Hognaston Winn Db 522, 376, 700, and the first el. ON  viðr (gen.sg. viðar ) 'a wood', or OE  wiðer1 'a ram, a wether'.
