Etymology

v. tūn . The first element may be the same as that in Anderton La 128, for which the OE  pers.n. Ēanrǣd has been suggested, while OE  Ēanðrȳð (fem.) is also possible. But consideration should be given to the ON  pers.n. Eindriði , *Andriði , or ODan  Endrithi , *Andriði , as in Enderby Lei, L, Ainderby YN, v. Lindkvist 39, NRY 223, Fellows Jensen 75–6. The element tūn is not particularly Scandinavian, but cf. Gayton, Claughton, Storeton, Larton 326, 325, 327, 326infra , v. Saga Book xiv 307. The OScand pers.n. is likely, with buskr , in Antrobus 127infra , four miles from Anderton.
