Etymology

'At the broad clearing', v. brād , lēah . The cross is lost. It was mentioned in the deposition of John de Massey in the case of Scrope versus Grosvenor, 1386. It had borne the challenged arms of Grosvenor (azure, a bend or) for twenty-six years and stood beside the highway from Warrington La, to Knutsford, probably at 101–658847, where Grappenhall, Lymm and Appleton meet, and where the line of Cliff Lane meets an old line of paths 101–645843 to 665848, v. Sheaf1 3156, cf. 144 XI, Cliff Lane 141infra .
