Etymology

'Stone fortification', v. stān , burh (dat.sg. byrig ), cf. Stainborough i, 312supra (to which belongs the 1235 FF spelling sometimes wrongly identified with Stanbury). On the form -bury cf. Horbury ii, 150supra . No trace of the fortification remains.
