Etymology

Thornbury, 1547 FF, 'fortified place overgrown with thorns', v. þorn , burh , cf. Thornborough (Allerton Mauleverer) pt. v infra .This, like Horbury ii, 150supra and Stanbury 269infra and some other YW p.ns. has the Midland -bury (OE  dat.sg. byrig ).
