Etymology

Kipping Lane, Kippin 1639 WillY, Chipping in Thornton 1648Briggs 7, Kipping 1683 BfdAntq ii, 502, Kipping Lane End 1704 LPTax, Kipping Lane House 1822 Langd. The material is not decisive, but this could be a scandinavianised form of OE  cēping 'a market'; Chipping La 143 has (apart from initial K -) a development to ME  Chipping similar to that postulated for Kipping. Kipping Lane is in the centre of Thornton opposite Market St. Cf. Cippingcliue (Bingley) pt. iv.
