Cocking Lane Fm, Cokan 1550, 1567 Arm 224, 315, Cocka 1598 PRBfd, Cockan 1600, 1613 ib, 1620, 1623 FF, 1643 WillY, Cockanlane 1631 WRC, Cockan in Clayton 1636 WillY, Cockin Lane 1850TA . This is probably a humorous name derived from ME  Cokaygne , the name of an imaginary land of idleness and luxury (Land of Cokayne , PhilSoc 1862). The form in -an is a common orthographic variant of -ain in YW (cf. Phonol. § 11).
