Etymology

Gillhope [dʒilʌp] is Gilhope (1553Ct ) with Gillhope field and Wood in Heathfield parish adjoining, was, as Mr Macleod suggests, clearly the home of Peter de Chillehope (1296 SR).Cille is on record as a woman's name in OE , or we may have a weak form Cilia of the strong masc. Cille . v. hop . 'Cilia's enclosure.'
