Etymology

Birchington (not on map but adjoining Effingham House and Little Common) is Birchington in 1278Ass (p), Birchynton 1402AsM , Byrchyngton 1430AOMB 56. It seems to be the same as the pers. name Bychinton , Bychyngton found in 1327 and 1332 (SR). The forms are insufficient for any satisfactory etymology.
