Etymology

'Farmstead, village with a spring', v. wella , tūn . There are two other examples of this name in L, Welton le Marsh, Candleshoe Wapentake LSR and Welton le Wold, Louthesk Wapentake LSR (v. DLPN 136).

In the following, spellings marked with * are taken from 'The historical value of place names, and field names, in villages' in Scholae Cancellarii Lincolniensis vol. 111, no. 10, Michaelmas 1922, and 'Notes on the History of Welton-by-Lincoln' (1910) by the Rev. A. Hunt. In the first of these, Hunt lists place-names taken from Terriers ; unfortunately, the documents have not been traced and so these spellings have not been checked.
