Etymology

Forms from spurious AS charters have not been included.

Lincolnshire denoted a district (v. scīr ) comprising the Parts of Lindsey, Kesteven and Holland. It was an English creation after the reconquest of the Danelaw in the earlier 10th century and must have included at least the areas under the control of the Danish armies of Lincoln and of Stamford, v. further, F.M. Stenton, Anglo -Saxon England , 3rd ed. 1971, p. 338. Forms in N - are due to AN influence.
