Etymology

Salway Ash (SY 455965), Salway Ash 1811 OS, Shallways Ash 1682DCMCt , Solway Ash 1863 Hutch3, named from the former manor and tithing of Ash supra . The first part of the name is Schowlewey 1405 AD I, found earlier in the surnames of John Scholewey 1327, Alice (de ) Shouleweye , John (de ) Shouleweye 1332 SR who were taxpayers in the tithing of Ash, and surviving in a cluster of f.ns. on Ash Fm infra , viz. Gt Shally & Lt Shally , Shally Orchd 1839TA ; this is 'shovel way', probably denoting a 'hollow and/or narrow way' from its fancied resemblance to the blade of a shovel. The first part of the name Salway Ash could therefore be p.n. or surname: it may be explained as 'that part of Ash by Shouleweye ', or 'that part of Ash associated with the family called Shouleweye '.
