Etymology

'Farmstead or settlement belonging to the traders or merchants', from mangere and tūn . Perhaps the merchants were from Bridport which lies some 2 miles SW. The site of a chapel (already 'long ruinated' in 1774 Hutch1) is marked 6″, cf. ecclesiam (Sancti Andr ') de Mangerton '1268Ass , Chapel Orchd 1839TA .
