Etymology

'(Place at) the ash-tree', from æsc (dat.sg. æsce ), cf. Ash in Stourpaine par. 2 116, v. Bradpole par. supra . The early affix Chauel is manorial, cf. Bingham's Fm infra . Ash was formerly a large manor and tithing, and gives name also to Salway Ash, Ash Fm and Ashleigh all infra .
