Etymology

Fulshaw Hall, Fulshawe Haule 1587 Earw, (le ) Scherd l13Fitt (p), 1285 Court, le Shert 1277 Earw, (p), le Sherd 1361Eyre (p), Scherd in Fulshaw 1507 Earw, v. scerde 'a gap'. The present Fulshaw Hall, on the site of a house called Sherd (cf. the family surname Sherd in Shirdfold, Shert Hall 182 supra , 271 infra ), succeeds an earlier house the Hall of Fulshaw 1413 Earw, which stood in a field called the Blackfield (Earw I 151, 157), cf. Black Fd, Old Hall Crofts infra .
